Kuchipudi

Kuchipudi derives its name from the place of its birth – Kuchipudi grama in Andrapradesh, a southern state of India. Although it has developed as a dance drama with its roots going back to the 15th century, the dance form now is equally renowned for its solo performances. It is in the last 40 years that women have been performing this classical dance form which involves a complex technique of dancing on a plate – thatte – while balancing a pot on the head.

Devika Rao added one more facet to her dancing career by learning Kuchipudi from Smt. Vyjayanthi Kashi of Shambhavi Nritya School, Bangalore. It was Devika’s privilege to be on a six – member team which performed a new ballet named ” Yagna” choreographed by Smt. Vyjayanthi Kashi .Constantly seeking innovation and novelty, Devika has hitched her wagon to the stars.
